The Facts About Hoodia Weight Loss Super Drug Or Bust
For many individuals out there obesity is the biggest problem of their lives. Looking for something to help many turn to pills including appetite suppression pills. Recently a new product has hit the market, and hit it hard. This product is Hoodia.
To many the supplement Hoodia promises appetite suppression and no known side effects. More specifically this extract comes from a succulent plant native to South Africa in the Namibian desert called Hoodia gordonii. This plant is a favorite of the San bushmen of the area and is used when they go on long hunting trips for the slightly euphoric feeling it gives as well as appetite suppression. In 1937 a Dutchman studying the San celebrated these qualities of this plant bringing it to the attention of the Western world.
Now this supplement and its products have had some outstanding claims attached to it. First of all some of these purported studies are not all that easy to delve into. Of the two most commonly claimed studies only one actually used an extract from the plant itself. The other used an extracted molecule known as P-57. This is thought to be the main appetite suppressor and was found to increase the Hypothalmic ATP production in rats, this was what the study focused on. Observations of the study did not the rats tended to eat less in a 24 hour time period. The other study is that of a minute two week study done by a group in South Africa. Over this time period individuals were given either a pill containing an extract of Hoodia or a placebo pill. They were then given three options, to watch TV, sleep or eat. This observe has some problems in that it was not sent to a peer reviewed journal, but it also showed the plants ability to suppress appetite.
So whats the problem then? Well there are several actually. Though this supplement was found to suppress appetite more studies are needed to substantiate the many internet claims. There are very few studies on this plant itself. Also there is the problem of availability. The succulent plant has evolved in a desert setting, and like many desert plants it is not very abundant. The plant is rare and takes a rather long time to old for it to be harvested. Many Hoodia scams result from companies selling products with less than reported extracts of Hoodia or no Hoodia extracts at all. The demand for the supplement is too high for the current amount. Another problem is the fact that some claims about Hoodia are completely false, it suppresses appetite that is all. It does not make you lose weight or eat healthy and needs to be only used for appetite suppression if used at all.
